US-based semiconductor manufacturer Micron has begun construction of its $2.75 billion semiconductor testing and assembly facility in Sanand, Gujarat, to reduce imports and meet local semiconductor requirements.
The facility, located in the Industrial Development Corporation area of Chaarodi, Sanand, is the largest investment under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
The plant will invest $825 million over seven years and will be set up on 93 acres of land.
Phase 1 of the facility's construction will include 5,000 square feet of cleanroom space, operational by late next year.
The project includes the design and construction of a first-of-its-kind DRAM and NAND assembly and test plant in India.
The first chipset rollout from Micron's Sanand plant is expected to happen by December 2024.
Micron announced its plans to establish a new semiconductor assembly and test facility in India during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to the US.
Within 15 months, India has seen the construction of its first-ever semiconductor plant, received more manufacturing proposals, and 8 chip designing startups operating in the country.
The country has also seen a significant increase in mobile manufacturing, with Apple and Samsung smartphones worth Rs 1 lakh crore.
