This is probably the biggest iOS update since iOS 7 in 2013, as it brings some big changes and industry-first features.
Starting with home screen customization, iOS 18 finally allows users to place icons wherever they want and leave space to see the wallpaper. Apple has also copied Google's Material You theming, allowing users to customize the look and feel of the interface.
The new Control Center is a standout feature, with three pages of controls, media playback, and important toggles. Users can now resize, rearrange, and add more controls, including from third-party apps. The Control Center is highly customizable, with the ability to add up to 15 pages.
iOS 18 also has a lot of subtle changes, like new animations, a revamped Settings app, and the ability to lock apps using Face ID. The Phone app now has T9 dialing and call recording, while the Photos app has a new layout and features like filtering and hiding screenshots.
Messages gets text formatting options and fun text effects. It also introduces the ability to schedule messages and support for messaging via satellite in emergencies.
Other notable updates include a revamped Calculator app with history support and math notes, a new Passwords app, and eye-tracking controls similar to the Apple Vision Pro.
At the core of iOS 18 is Apple Intelligence, which brings features like priority notifications, Genemoyi, and Image Playground. While it's still catching up to Android in terms of AI, this update is a significant step forward for iPhone users.
Overall, iOS 18 is a substantial update that addresses many longstanding user requests, such as app locking, T9 dialing, and call recording. While Android fans may scoff at some of the "new" features, iPhone users will likely appreciate the improvements and customization options.
