Amazon Could Finally Stop Using Android For Fire TV Stick: What Happens Now?

Amazon could end its journey with Android for devices like the Fire TV Stick and switch to its own operating system called Vega OS as per reports this week. As you might be aware, the company has used the forked version of Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for its Fire TV Stick and the Fire range of tablets. But now it seems keen to go in-house with the new platform that will eventually cover all the Amazon products. The company had a big AI event recently but we didn’t hear anything about Amazon’s decision to stop using Android as the base platform. The Vega OS is rumoured to be based on Linux which could help the company tweak the user interface and offer more proactive support for the future versions. The report also mentions that the Fire TV will be the first to get the new Vega OS platform and gradually you might see the Echo Show smart display devices also using the new platform. It could be a major change for Amazon and history shows that ditching Android doesn’t always work out. You have the examples of Samsung and Huawei who decided to offer their own platforms but the situation didn’t go in their favour, even though one of them was forced to stop using Android after it faced sanctions to work with US companies. But these instances are enough to tell you why leaving Android doesn’t work out in most cases, especially, if you operate in the mobile ecosystem. Many of you might be wondering what happens to the existing Fire TV devices that Amazon has sold over the years, because if Vega OS is not compatible with the older devices, Amazon will be put in an awkward position with the consumers. Amazon is bringing Panos Panay from Microsoft to head its hardware division and it is likely that Panay will most likely have more details to share about the supposed new OS in the coming months.
