YouTube is rolling out a substantial update that introduces innovative ways to search for and manage content on its platform. Key among these changes is the official launch of the ‘Search by Song’ tool, allowing users to look up songs by humming, singing, or playing a tune directly into YouTube. Similar to Shazam, this feature employs AI technology to match the user's input with the original recording. This tool, which was initially introduced in beta in August, remains unchanged in its final version. To use this tool, activate Voice Search on YouTube, then switch to the Song recorder, where they can play, sing, or hum the tune for approximately three seconds into their phone's microphone. Relevant official music content will then be displayed on the screen. Initially, ‘Search by Song’ will be exclusive to Android phones, with a rollout planned in the next few weeks. There's no word yet on when it will become available on iOS. In addition to ‘Search by Song,’ YouTube is introducing several other features, which will be more widely accessible. One notable addition is the introduction of the ‘You’ tab, combining a user's account page with their Library tab. This consolidation creates a convenient one-stop shop for configuring profile settings, locating downloads, and accessing previously watched videos. This enhancement eliminates the need for users to navigate between different sections. The YouTube player is also receiving extra controls to enhance the user experience. On mobile devices, a ‘Stable Volume’ toggle switch is being introduced to reduce sudden and jarring differences in audio volume, particularly in content with suboptimal audio mixing. Additionally, the update includes a ‘lock screen’ feature, which does precisely as the name suggests, locking a smartphone's or tablet's display to prevent unwanted interruptions. Finally, YouTube is rolling out ‘Press to 2x,’ allowing users to instantly double the playback speed by pressing and holding down on the YouTube player. This feature, available on web platforms, mobile devices, and tablets, provides users with more control over their video playback speed.
