Vivo and Transsion Set To Launch First Rollable Smartphone In 2024

Vivo and Transsion Holdings are gearing up to introduce the world's first rollable screen smartphones in a bold move to transform the smartphone industry. The launch timeline for these upcoming devices has already surfaced, with expectations set for the end of 2024. Vivo, renowned for its ventures into foldable smartphones, is now venturing into the rollable phone domain. This exploration initially took shape in April of the previous year with the introduction of the Vivo X Fold, followed by the Vivo X Fold 2, which featured enhanced cameras and updated internals. Now, Vivo aims to push the boundaries further by incorporating rollable display technology into their repertoire, as The Elec reports. Transsion Holdings, the parent company of popular brands like Itel, Tecno, and Infinix, has also ventured into the rollable smartphone realm. One of their subsidiaries has already showcased the Tecno Phantom Ultimate, a concept smartphone boasting a 6.55-inch display that gracefully expands to 7.11 inches with a simple press of a button. The Phantom Ultimate features a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) rollable display, featuring an impressive 1596 x 2296 pixel resolution. While these innovations capture the imagination, it's essential to remember that they are currently conceptual. It will likely take several years for these pioneering devices to transition into the commercial market and become seamlessly integrated into users' daily routines. Industry giants such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, and TCL have all flirted with similar concepts in recent years, each presenting their unique take on rollable and expandable smartphones. Motorola, for instance, unveiled its rollable Rizr concept at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2023, featuring a 5-inch panel that seamlessly extends into a 6.5-inch canvas with a double-press of the power button. Samsung, meanwhile, introduced its Flex Hybrid concept at CES, offering a combination of sliding and folding capabilities with versatile screen sizes ranging from 10.5 inches to 12.4 inches. Even LG, despite discontinuing its mobile phone business in 2021, showcased a rollable smartphone at CES 2021, and Oppo has also joined this innovative movement.
